Best Things to Do in Funchal in June 2022

The Isle of Eternal Spring is home to tons of interesting sights, wonderful events, exciting festivals, and more. But what is the best of the best and when does it take place? Here are our recommendations for Funchal in June 2022.

June festivals and music in Funchal

Starting with music, you can experience the oldest mandolin orchestra in Europe named Orquestra de Mandolins da Madeira whose beautiful tunes will be last played in Madeira on June 3rd. June 17th will commemorate the great late Eurico Martins, June 10th will see the Concerto Teresa Salguiero, and Rita Rocha will play on June 11th.

But one of the largest events in Funchal in June is the Atlantic Festival. Every Saturday, you can enjoy the amazing fireworks display from the Pontinha pier. Various companies will set their fireworks to music and the public can then vote via the internet or ballot boxes placed in the Funchal city center to decide the winner. Part of the Atlantic Festival is a music festival, a regional bread fair, a dance show by the Quorum Ballet group, and the Regional Arts Week which has actually expanded to cover all sorts of fun and interesting activities throughout the whole month.

Long-standing traditions in Funchal

By now a long-standing tradition, the 48th edition of the Funchal Book Fair will launch on June 3rd and go on until June 12th. You can enjoy conferences, book launches, as well as exhibitions which show all about books and their production. And since the festival is joined both by authors and publishing houses, there is a lot to learn.

If you like more of a battle of wits, then the 55th European National Team Championship in Bridge might interest you. With over 1000 participants from all over the world and half a dozen categories, you can experience the thrill of seeing the best players clashing in this traditional card game.

Sporting events in Funchal in June

If you love sports and racing, then the SUP Challenge might pique your interest. The stand-up paddleboard racers will start from pier seven of the Funchal port on June 11th and 12th. After the success of its first edition in Portugal, this up-and-coming competition is now being hosted by Funchal and it’s worth seeing.

If you want to take part in something truly unique in Madeira, however, then you need to check out the Madeira Canyoning Meeting between June 6th and 11th. Madeira’s steep topography full of beautiful vistas and cliffs is one of the best places to enjoy this sport. And the meeting aims to promote it to the general public as much as it can.

Funchal Food events in June

One of the events that will excite any gastronomy lover is The Art of Flavours festival, held between June 3rd and 4th. Hosted by the Michelin-starred chef Luís Pestana, you can look forward to beautiful surroundings, a fun atmosphere, and of course, delicious culinary experiences.

And though this may be a bit of a ride from Funchal, we need to mention the absolutely heart-warming Sopas do Campo Fair in Boaventura. Between June 10th and 11th, the small town celebrates at least eighteen different traditional soups spanning flavors like cashew, chestnut, yellow pumpkin, and more.
