Why Madeira Island Is the Ultimate Digital Nomads Haven

Many countries have been opening themselves up to digital nomads more and more, but none have been so consistently good at it as Madeira Island. From coworking and co-living spaces to the weather, the island offers everything nomads could want and more. So here are just some of the reasons why Madeira Island is great for digital nomads.

Weather in Madeira

Madeira Island is called the “Island of Eternal Spring” for a good reason. In August, the warmest month of the year, the temperature is somewhere between 13° and 25°C, while in February, the coldest month, it’s between 6° and 17°C. Be it summer or winter, and you can always enjoy mild weather in Madeira perfect for hiking or even swimming if you are a bit hardy. Many places are either too hot or too cold. Madeira Island will always be just right.

Daily life in Madeira

Madeira island is one of the most relaxing places in Portugal you could pick. But that does not mean this island is somehow underdeveloped. The recent boom in tourism and visitors has brought many modern affordances like shopping centres and good quality of healthcare with its 47 public health centres. On top of that, you can find a fair number of private clinics that offer further help.

The island is also foreigner-friendly because many people communicate in English – this is thanks to all the tourism. And in 2015, Madeira was named the safest place in the world by the World’s Leading Island destination award. Another welcomed feature of Madeira is its traffic. Unlike large cities, Madeira lets you easily traverse it via car with not much traffic to deal with. Additionally, public transport is also decent, if primarily based on busses so getting to and from the central city is no big issue.

Alternatively, you can get a taxi, called “abelhinha”, or Uber to travel small distances. Low monthly expenses are another great feature of the island. Compared to the mainland’s capital, Lisbon, the accommodation prices are 30% cheaper across the board, and that’s just in Funchal, the central city of Madeira. Some things can be more affordable than on the mainland, while some are more expensive when it comes to groceries. The island imports make certain foods more expensive.

Madeira as an outdoorsperson’s paradise

Madeira island is excellent for just about any summer sport you can imagine. The island has it all, from beach sports to diving, kayaking and hiking, mountain climbing and cycling. Its beautiful countryside has many winding roads along the water-bearing levadas, while its beaches offer great spots for relaxing and sunbathing. Few places in the world are so hospitable to sports of all kinds – and the most significant advantage is that you won’t have to suffer a heat stroke or freeze to death to enjoy yourself.

Digital nomad village

Another unique feature of accommodation in Madeira is its digital nomad villages. Backed by many, including the local government and companies like Flatio, a digital town is more than just a coworking space – it’s a place to live, build communities, and find new opportunities. The project has been so well received that many such nomad villages have been springing up all around the island. So not only can you enjoy all the advantages of living in Madeira, but you’ll have the digital nomad community right by your side.
