Uruguay Introduces Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

Are you a digital nomad looking for an ideal destination in South America? Then Uruguay is just the place for you!

This underrated gem known for its delicious steak, pristine beaches, and high standard of living has, as Euronews reports, recently introduced a digital nomad visa that makes it a prime choice for tech workers and remote professionals.

Easy application process and requirements

The Uruguay digital nomad visa features a straightforward application process and minimal requirements. Unlike many other countries, Uruguay doesn't require a minimum income from applicants, making it accessible to a wide range of remote workers.

In addition, the entire application process can be completed online, eliminating the need for complicated paperwork and in-person visits to embassies or consulates.

Tax exemption for technological services

One of the most enticing aspects of the Uruguayan visa for digital nomads is the tax exemption for technological services.

The Uruguayan government recognizes the importance of the digital economy and wants to attract digital nomads working in the technology sector.

Therefore, income from technological services is exempt from tax, which is a significant advantage for digital nomads working in this field.

How to apply

To apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa, you must either work for companies based outside Uruguay or be self-employed. Joint applications with spouses or family members are unfortunately not currently possible. Each person wishing to obtain the visa must submit a separate application.

The application process begins after you enter Uruguay as a tourist. To submit your application, visit the official government website and fill out the online form

The form will ask for your personal information, and you'll need to sign a written statement certifying that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your stay in the country.

After you have submitted your application and paid the application fee, you'll receive your residence permit by email. This permit entitles you to stay in Uruguay for 180 days. This gives you enough time to experience the country's culture and explore its natural wonders.

Costs and payment options

The cost of the Uruguay digital nomad visa is relatively low, at €9. However, it's important to know that payment with a foreign bank account isn't accepted. Although it's technically possible to apply for the visa before you arrive in Uruguay, it may be more convenient to wait until you're in the country to apply.

If you don't have a bank account in Uruguay or a local friend who can help you, there are stores throughout the country where you can pay bills, including the visa application fee. Be sure to complete payment within one day of submitting your application to avoid delays or complications.

Extending your stay in Uruguay

If you want to extend your stay in Uruguay beyond the initial 180 days granted by the digital nomad visa, you'll need to meet a few additional requirements. To stay in the country for up to a year, you'll need to provide a clean criminal record from all countries you've stayed in for more than six months in the last five years. You must also present a vaccination certificate issued in Uruguay.

Future changes and considerations

It's important to keep in mind that the Uruguay digital nomad visa is relatively new and that the current ease of the application process and requirements may change over time.

While there is currently no minimum income requirement, it's possible that changes may be introduced in the future. Therefore, it's advisable to keep abreast of any changes or additional criteria that may be introduced.
