Tourist tax in Lisbon doubled

Lisbon City Council has agreed to increase the tourist tax on overnight stays from two to four euros per night, as proposed by PSD/CDS-PP, reports The Portugal news.

The PSD/CDS-PP proposal also includes increasing the tourist tax for arrivals by sea from one euro to two euros. The proposal will undergo a "30-day public consultation period" to gather input before it becomes effective.

Following the vote, Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas (PSD), wrote in a written statement to the Lusa agency that raising the tourist tax is primarily beneficial for the city and its residents. He emphasized that this decision will enhance tourism quality and support investments in vital areas like urban cleanliness, transportation, and infrastructure and heritage preservation.

This option to increase the tourist tax results from the conclusion that tourism in Lisbon today needs to contribute more and better to the quality of life in our city. And thus also raise the quality of the tourist who comes to us,”

The social democrat emphasized the importance of continuously assessing the situation based on existing real scenarios and specific circumstances.

In May 2021, during an interview with TVI while running for president of the Lisbon Chamber, Moedas said he was considering lowering the tourist tax amid economic recovery from the covid-19 pandemic.
