Thailand aims to increase tourism with extended stays for visitors, students, and digital nomads

In May 2024, Thailand's government announced it is extending visa stays for tourists, postgrad students, and remote workers. The aim is to boost tourism amid economic challenges, Reuters reports.

From June of the same year, visitors from 93 countries can stay for 60 days instead of 57, and more will qualify for visas upon arrival, according to government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke.

Foreign students can stay an extra year after graduating, and insurance requirements for retirees will be eased. Tourism, crucial for Thailand's economy and jobs, will benefit from these changes.

The new measures aim to attract more visitors by extending on-arrival visa stays from 30 to 60 days.

Extending digitaal nomad visas

Thailand is extending the digital nomad visas for remote workers from 60 days to five years, with each stay capped at 180 days. From January to May 26, 2024, Thailand had 14.3 million tourists and aims to reach a record 40 million foreign visitors by year-end, expecting to generate 3.5 trillion baht ($95.73 billion).
In 2019, before the pandemic, Thailand saw a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating 1.91 trillion baht.
