Many places in Europe claim to be the best for remote worker opportunities but very few bring anything new to the table. Madeira is different.
In cooperation with StartupMadeira and the local Government, Ponta do Sol is now home to the 1st Digital Nomad Village in Europe. The village together with co-working spaces and beautiful surroundings is a must-try for all the Digital Nomads out there.
Flatio is a strategical partner of Start Up Madeira as the accommodation provider offering over 200+ listings across the Island. Check out our website to secure your spot on the isle of eternal spring.
What is Ponta do Sol like?
Ponta do Sol is one of the areas of Madeira Island which was among the first to be settled (around 1420), and for a good reason. It’s a beautiful place. The name translates to “sun point” which is fitting as this parish, along with the neighboring parishes of Canhas and Madalena do Mar, is one of the warmest places on the island year-round. So if you love swimming and gorgeous sunsets, this place is perfect for you.
The area of the three parishes is home to some 8000 people. As such, you can be sure you’ll find everything you need from churches, restaurants, supermarkets, and banks to many hiking trails along the levadas (a special kind of aqueduct that routes water from the mountains to the seaside towns).
It’s this irrigation system that helps growing sugar cane, bananas, and most importantly, the famous Madeira wine grown in the region.
How to get to Ponta do Sol?
It’s difficult to fly anywhere these days, with all the COVID-19 restrictions, but there is some good news. Residents in the European Union and the Schengen countries can travel to Madeira (but should definitely check with their local authorities about restrictions on traveling out of their countries).
Sadly, digital nomads from the US, Canada, and Brazil will have to wait for a bit as their countries have travel restrictions into Portugal, though these may change.
After you have dealt with all the administrative hoops, you can simply hop on a plane to the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in Funchal and then take a bus or rent a car for about a half-an-hour-long journey to Ponta do Sol.
What is the coworking space like?
The co-working space in Ponta do Sol is provided by the Digital Nomads Madeira Island company and is free of charge to use between February 1st to June 30th, 2021.
The company is still in its early stages of development, so don’t expect anything breathtaking, but it should have all the necessities for a productive session:
- Wi-Fi
- printer
- most importantly a coffee machine
Due to the COVIC-19 social distancing policies, the co-working space can be used in shifts, for time being.
