Hungary Introduces New Residence Permit for Digital Nomads

Hungary is a beautiful place to stay, even if only for a few months living, especially now when the borderless experience of digital nomads has been made even easier thanks to the new residence permit. But how does it work, and how can you get one? Here’s an overview of the essential info about the permit.

What is the White Card?

The White Card is a new form of residency permit instituted by the Hungarian government in 2022. It lasts for one year (with a possible extension for another year). It is specifically constructed for those non-European Union citizens who get their income from abroad and use information technology to make money. This includes traditional employment, freelancing, or even owning a company or stock abroad.

The main point is that the White Cardholders must make their income from abroad and have no outstanding profit from Hungary. This continues a broader trend not just within Hungary but also in Europe. Many countries have introduced (or are in the process of introducing) simpler visa processes for digital nomads and non-EU remote workers. The value of international workers with income from outside the country is finally dawning on many governments. And this is a trend that’s likely to continue.

Requirements for getting the White Card

One of the main requirements is sufficient funds. You must make above €2000 per month for half a year before you move to Hungary and apply for the White Card. The proof of funds can be your tax returns or issued by your employer. This income is taken to be after-tax since Hungary is trying to see if you have access to enough resources.

The main documentation you will need is some form of identification, proof of funds as well as the feasibility of electronic remote work, proof of accommodation in Hungary, proof of healthcare insurance (for this you will have to go private), and the travel tickets. Make sure that the documentation is also translated into Hungarian and be prepared that the immigration officer may ask you for additional information and documentation since the process is new.

The application process can be done both from outside of Hungary as well as when you’re already granted a different form of stay. The process will cost about €100—if you decide to go through the process in Hungary, you can partially use an online application which will drive down the cost. Once you apply, you’ll need to wait roughly 30 days for the government to issue the white card. But once you have it, you’re done. Just don’t forget to register your accommodation if you arrive after being given the card.
