Vienna is a vast and far-reaching city and its many districts can seem indistinguishable to a newcomer. Luckily Flatio has looked into it and found the best places to stay. From vibrant neighbourhoods which are teeming with life no matter what time it is in Vienna, Austria right now to calm residential areas to the city centre itself, there’s something for everyone.
Where to stay in Vienna
The many different districts may be confusing but there are essentially three large areas which are worth checking out, each with its own special flavour of Vienna. The 1st District is the city centre itself where you’ll find most of the famous architecture such as the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches Museum and the Parliament on Ring Street, or the St. Stephans Cathedral which is right in the middle of the district. The most prestigious shopping streets like Kärntner Straße, Graben and Kohlmarkt can be found right next to Museums such as Albertina and cafés such as Café Sacher or Café Central. And all of this won’t be more than a 20 min walk away, if you decide to stay in the 1st District.
The next part of Vienna to look out for is the 6th and 7th District. Its many artisan cafés and bars, as well as fewer tourists, speak of its fundamentally young and vibrant nature. Instead of sights, you might want to see the picturesque Spittelberg with its narrow cobblestone streets and instead of luxurious shopping streets, the famous Naschmarkt will serve as a place to go for a few drinks with friends in the evening. In short, 6th and 7th District is where things are happening and the best area to stay in Vienna for nightlife.
Lastly, there is the 8th and 9th District which might seem a bit bland at first glance. There are no artisan bars or grand sights. There seem to be no tourists or cool kids. But that’s exactly its strength. These two districts are calm residential areas with beautiful parks and quiet neighbourhoods. Even the many university institutions don’t spoil the atmosphere. Here you will find the insider’s Vienna where locals live and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet from all the rush of the city crowds.
Best hotels in Vienna
The number of hotels and hostels one can find in Vienna is staggering. But we chose a few of the crème de la crème for you. The first, and the most affordable we recommend here is the Grätzl Hotel. Its modern and unique ground floor design works with giving former shops a new life. This one-time experience can be found very close to the centre, in the 2nd district. The second and more traditional hotel is The Guesthouse whose clean and modern design is placed right across the street from Albertina, in the 1st District. And finally, if you’re looking for traditional luxurious hotels which make you feel like you have been transported to Habsburg times try the Hotel Imperial or Hotel Sacher.
Best flats for rent in Vienna
Many of you know that to get cheap accommodation in Vienna, or just about anywhere in Europe, means to go to sites like AirBNB or Couchsurfing but they have proven often unreliable or sometimes even a bit unsafe. Flatio, on the other hand, is neither of those things. Its apartments are not just places to sleep, but homes to be remembered. Even if you stayed just for a few weeks or for a whole year. There’s a place for everyone, whether you’re a student, digital nomad, expat or all of the above, Flatio has a home for you.
Best places to stay in Vienna with family
Even here Flatio can help as its large variety of apartments caters to all sizes of families. But if you’re looking for a hotel that will get you by for a short visit we can recommend Hotel Admiral. It offers apartments of up to four rooms and even apartments with kitchenettes. It’s near both the Ring Street and the city centre as well as the underground station which will get you to the rest of Vienna. The second hotel we recommend is the Austria Trend Hotel Lassalle Wien. Its proximity to the Danube river means that you will have places like Prater amusement park or the Danube Island nearby. And if you want to see the sights, public transport will get you to the city centre in about 10 minutes.
