Weather in Vienna, Austria month by month - temperature and precipitation

There are many things one needs to consider when travelling to a new country or city, from tickets to rentals in Vienna. But nothing can spoil a good vacation quite like bad weather. That’s why it’s a good idea to know when you should travel to Vienna based on the weather. Here is a quick overview of Vienna's climate, average yearly temperatures and more.

Vienna's average yearly temperature

The average yearly temperatures are between 6 °C and 14 °C (42 °F and 57 °F) but this does not mean it’s stable throughout the year. Based on the season, the various temperature averages go from about -5 °C to as low as 27 °C (23 °F to 80 °F).

Climate

Vienna has an oceanic climate, which means that the weather is mostly temperate. The winters are cold and dry whilst the summers are hot and wet. The autumn tends to be rainy and the Spring often changing and unpredictable. Snowfall begins at about November and continues for as long as the temperatures hold around zero, but it’s overall less common than in Western and Southern parts of Austria.

Weather statistics for Vienna

The hottest month is July with temperature records going all the way up to 38 °C (100 °F) whilst the coldest month is January with the lowest recorded temperature at about -17 °C (or about 0,3 °F). The rainfall is moderate throughout the year and averages at about 550 mm (or 21,7 inches) though it varies wildly, especially during the summer storms. It also depends on the region as the area of Vienna Woods is far rainier than the flat dry plains to the East of the city.

January

January the coldest month in Vienna with average temperatures moving between -3 °C and 3 °C (26 °F and 37 °F). There is snowfall and cold wind tends to make it seem like it’s colder than it actually is.

February

February continues the Winter months with average temperatures between -2 °C and 5 °C (28 °F and 41 °F). The wind and snowfall continue from January and there’s an occasional rainfall.

March

March marks the beginning of Spring and sees the first rise in temperatures that becomes significantly felt with average temperatures between 1 °C and 10 °C (34 °F and 50 °F). This makes snowfall all but a rarity with rain coming in its stead.

April

April gets even warmer and brings temperatures roughly between 6 °C and 16 °C (43 °F and 61 °F). The weather becomes much less predictable and tends to swing wildly from warm sunny days to cold rainy ones.

May

May is even warmer with temperatures between 10 °C and 21 °C (50 °F and 70 °F). The weather tends to be much more stable with sunny days lasting for a few days at a time.

June

June marks the transition between Spring and Summer and sees average temperatures between 13 °C and 24 °C (55 °F and 75 °F).

July

July is the hottest month and as such sees its temperatures between 16 °C and 26 °C (61 °F and 79 °F). The sporadic rain of Spring is all but gone and instead one can experience sudden thunderstorms with strong wind.

August

August is very similar to July in its average temperatures of 15 °C to 26 °C (59 °F to 79 °F). The rainfall is pretty much the same.

September

September marks the transition from Summer to Autumn. The average temperatures lower to 11 °C to 21 °C (52 °F to 70 °F). Thunderstorms are rare during this month.

October

October grows colder still with temperatures between 6 °C and 15 °C (43 °F and 59 °F). The leaves of trees turnyellow and then brown in quick succession. Rainfall tends to be less severebut more regular.

November

November sees the descend of temperatures even further and can even rarely witness the first snowfall with temperatures between 2 °C and 8 °C (36 °F and 46 °F). The wind gets sharper and colder.

December

December marks the transition between Autumn and Winter with average temperatures between -2 °C and 3 °C (28 °F and 37 °F). The weather comes whole circle and resembles the cold days of January.
