There are many things to organise when you want to move to Prague for a few months living, but you cannot prepare for problems. Accidents, thefts, and much more can spoil a wonderful experience of a new city, so it is recommended to get travel insurance for the duration of your stay in Prague. Here are some tips and recommendations.
Medical insurance in Prague
There are essentially two different routes you can take for medical insurance, and each depends on your country of origin. If you are from the European Union, your medical insurance from your country of origin will most likely carry over to Prague as well. This is because the EU has implemented the European Health Insurance Card, which guarantees coverage in all countries members of the EU.
But to be sure, check your home country's rules as some insurance companies do not cover your expenses directly but will reimburse you after your medical procedure has been done. This is not ideal since you may not have the funds to cover your medical costs in the first place.
But what do you do when your home country is not part of the EU? This is where private insurance comes in.
Many private insurance companies cover medical expenses, like AXA, Expat.CZ, or ERV. Each has slightly different plans and prices; for example, AXA starts at about €1 a day while others may be more expensive. Private insurers, especially travel insurers, won’t pay your medical expenses unless they reach a certain threshold, like AXA, which only covers medical expenses that go above €30 000. Choosing a good travel insurance company is a critical decision. Look up company reviews and discuss individual plans with insurers that will suit your needs to ensure your trip to Prague is safe and worry-free.
Trip and baggage insurance in Prague
While medical insurance in Prague is relatively straightforward, trip and baggage insurance is all over the place. Your trip insurance will most likely be provided by the airline of your choice – it will cover things such as cancellations of your flight, lost or damaged baggage, and more. But on top of that, private companies and banks in the Czech Republic will also provide insurance for your luggage and your trip.
Banks such as KB and companies like Holiday Extras both extend the events covered by their insurance plans. KB adds tour cancellation insurance and medical insurance while Holidays Extras do everything from legal costs to repatriation expenses in the case of mortal injury. In short, there will be many companies whose offers cover a wide variety of insurance so you can rest easy about your upcoming trip to Prague.
