Going to a new city can be a massive change to your life, and it might take a while for you to feel completely comfortable in a new environment, but that does not mean you can’t have fun. There are tons of great places to go to in Budapest, whether to relax or to party. So below are some of the bars that are very popular with Erasmus students in Budapest.
Fecske Presszó
This place is excellent for students of all kinds. During the day, it serves various delicious foods with an eye on student pricing, and on the weekend, it offers a delightful local two-course meal for only €4. In the summer, make sure also to enjoy their terrace on which to savour your meal. Beer is also very cheap, only €2, so the place becomes more of a bar as the night progresses. But that’s not all. Fecske Presszó also has a small library and a historical floor dating back to the building’s aristocratic origins. So while you are enjoying delicious foods and drinks, you can also find out a bit about Budapest’s history. What’s not to love?
Lámpás
Situated in a tourist-heavy part of Budapest, many people pass this place as another tourist trap. But it is anything but. This gritty yet cosy cellar space is one of the more affordable places to go and have fun, with daily live music performances for your enjoyment. The bar has two sections, the front, which tends to get very loud, and the back, with many nooks and crannies to hide in for an intimate conversation. If you want a complete package that will not blow a hole in your pocket, Lámpás is it.

Szimpla Kert
Szimpla Kert is one of the countless famous ruin bars in Budapest. The concept is pretty simple, a bar resides in a re-purposed building or a parking lot that is fixed up enough to be functional, but the aesthetic of a slowly falling apart building is kept as is. And Szimpla Kert adds to that with surreal objects like a table made from an old Trabant car or a sofa from a repurposed bathtub. The bar itself has become famous throughout Budapest, so expect a full house. It even has its merchandise, if you want to have something to remember it by. But the main things people enjoy here are music and alcohol, and this place has both in spades. Go out with your new friends and enjoy a night you won’t forget.
Kisüzem
A place for conversations and political arguments by day, and a decadent artistic haven by night, Kisüzem is one of the few places in the Jewish District that has not yet gained wide notoriety. Many international students, artists, activists, and politically-minded people go here to sip tea and discuss during the day and then drink and laugh during the night. If you are looking for a more socially conscious crowd for your night out on the town, you should find it here.
Központ
Központ is one of the more touristy places on this list. Even though it is on the outskirts of the Jewish District (sometimes called the party district), it has become very popular with foreigners and locals alike. During the day, it is a great hang-out spot for a lovely cup of coffee or even breakfast or brunch with a friend. But come night, it becomes a spot for artists, journalists, and other influential figures who shuffle back and forth between this bar and Telep across the street. If you decide to come here, make sure to bring extra cash – it will be money well spent for the fun you’ll have.
