Prague Castle is one of the most important castles in the Czech Republic. It used to be the seat of power for dukes and kings and since 1918 it has been for presidents as well. It's a symbol of Czech statehood and one of the most visited cultural sights in Prague. Amongst other things, Prague Castle is interesting in that it's one of the largest castles in the world still inhabited by a head of state. Windsor castle is trailing right behind it. Part of the castle's court is the St. Vitus Cathedral where the coronation of Czech kings traditionally took place and where they also found their final resting place. You will also find the Czech crown jewels here, which can be seen only on special occasions.
Prague Castle Gardens
Altogether, the castle's grounds have 6 stunning gardens. The most unique is the Royal Garden which is also the largest. In addition to rare plants, there are also many important buildings, such as the Royal Summerhouse, which later served as an astrological observatory. The next garden is called "Na Baště" and was built in the style of Italian and Japanese gardens. The Riding School Terrace Garden is interesting because it stands on the roofs of garages owned by the president of the republic. The remaining gardens are Paradise Garden, Garden on the Ramparts, and The Hartig Garden.
The Golden Lane of Prague Castle
The Golden Lane is another popular tourist attraction. It is a romantic street with small houses built in the 16th century, which were inhabited up until the 2nd World War. Here you can visit a real goldsmith's shop, an alchemist lab, a house of a herbalist or a fortune-teller.
Riding school at the Prague Castle
The riding school was built by Emperor Leopold I. Originally, the building was designed for equestrian training and horseback entertainment of the nobility. At present, it is used as a significant exhibition hall with regular art exhibits that take place there.
Changing of the City Guard
The ceremonial changing of the guards can be seen every hour outside of the castle gates. At 12 o'clock in the 1st courtyard, the same happens with fanfares, along with the changing of the presidential standard.
