How to Travel the World as a Digital Nomad Couple

Traveling the world with a partner is a truly amazing experience. You not only get to see all the different cultures and ways of living but get to share it with someone you love as well. You and your partner (or partners) will learn so much about the world, which is why it’s important to have a clear idea of how to travel the world together.

Make time for one another

As digital nomads, having control over your routines is one of the largest benefits you have. But that means you now have to make sure you make time in each schedule to be with the other person. Making time and sticking with it is one of the best ways of making sure you’re not just two people who work in one room and sleep in one bed.

What can also be difficult is to switch off your working brain when you are with your partner. Remove all distractions like your phone or smartwatch. Focus only on your partner, how they feel, and what you feel when you’re with them. Try and avoid talking about work, especially when you have similar jobs. You don’t want to have an entire evening that was supposed to be about romance end up being about your deadlines.

Stress and open communication

The digital nomad lifestyle can create a high-pressure environment. You can get stuck in an airport for days with no end in sight. You might lose an important client and suddenly money becomes very tight. You can try entering a country, only to find out one of you can stay only for a few weeks due to administrative shenanigans. All this and more can create a lot of friction between partners.

The best way to deal with conflict that arises from stressful situations is open communication. Don’t talk about what the other has done to you, but instead what emotions you are having and why. This helps the other person listen to you (because they don’t feel attacked) and it creates space for both people to be heard. Sharing truly is caring.

Slow down and be alone

It is tempting to make your relationship a cornerstone of every activity you do throughout the day. After all, you might be working in the same apartment, cooking and sleeping together as well as discovering the world together. But this can be a strain on the relationship. Not only do you not have time for yourself but you will have fewer experiences to talk about when you do spend time together.

Spending a lot of time together can also make it seem like you are actually together all the time. This can result in not making time for one another in your schedules. Don’t fall into the trap that just because someone is working on their laptop five meters away from you means that you are spending time with them.

So make sure you slow down your rhythm and find some space for yourself where you will be alone with your thoughts. Use the fact that you are in a new country and explore it alone. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something you can show your partner on your next date.
