If you want to move to Hungary for a few months living, you need to first get a lot of essentials out of the way like a visa, a mid-term rental, and healthcare. But a lot of people don’t think beyond these practicalities. However, most people would agree that you'll start feeling lonely once you have all the material things sorted. This is why having a few ex-pat groups in your life can help out emotionally and provide you with helpful tips and ideas.
Online ex-pat groups
Finding online ex-pat groups can help you get your bearings at the beginning of your stay as a remote worker. While you can prepare for a lot in life, there are specificities in Hungary that you won’t see coming and having a community of ex-pats online that can help you make sense of them can be helpful.
Facebook is the number one place to go when you want to find such a community.
The most populated group for ex-pats is Hungary EXPATS 😊, a group with over 40 000 members. The group has strict no ads and no profanity policy, making it an enjoyable and friendly place to ask questions and engage with people. There’s also the Budapest Expats - The International Community in Hungary with about 1 400 members, though it focuses more on Budapest alone.
Additionally, Internations also has a vibrant community of ex-pats in just about any country globally, and the site also provides you with helpful tips and ideas for living in Hungary. It’s an excellent resource both for people and information.
Offline ex-pat groups
Most offline ex-pat groups in Hungary will be, inevitably, in Budapest like the International Meeting Point, Budapest Fun seekers, or the Budapest Language and Cocktails. And if you live in or near Budapest, it’s an excellent idea to go and enjoy the ex-pat community there. People from all over the world are drawn to the metropolis, which means a lot of potential friends, love interests, or business partners.
But there are groups and events outside of Budapest as well. However, these can be a bit tricky to find. The best idea is to ask if something is happening on the local Facebook groups (each city has at least one) and see what people tell you. That way, you can find events such as the one organised by the Debrecen Business Expat Club, German conversations, and much more.
