It’s pretty clear why one should know emergency numbers. Most of the time we have no use for them, but there comes a day when they might be invaluable. But since each country has its own emergency numbers, it may become rather difficult to remember them all. So below you will find emergency numbers for you, your teeth, and your pets in Budapest. If you’re in danger right now, call 112.
112 - European emergency number
112 emergency number will connect you with local emergency services in all the countries of the European Union as well as Albania, Georgia, Moldova, Iceland, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, and Turkey. It has been instituted to make sure that wherever you are in the EU, you know what number to call in emergency situations.
The number is useful both for locals and for foreigners, though English-speaking operators might not always be available. People who are differently-abled also have the option to access the service via SMS to the 112 number or through the 112-SOS app. If you don’t want to remember any other number in this article, remember this one as it will connect you to anything from ambulances and the police to the fire brigade. Currently, the average time to answer a 112 call is about 5 seconds.
Budapest emergency numbers
But as is usual, Hungary has its own national emergency numbers. Here are the main ones:
ambulance & emergency medical services | 104 |
fire-brigade, rescue services, civil protection | 105 |
police | 107 |
Apart from the general services, there are a few specific numbers: such as 191, which is an English directory service, +36 1 438 8080 which is for 24-hour English language crime hotline, and 06-1-2400-475 which is the 24-hour medical assistance in English, but the last two are kinda hard to remember. There’s also the 24-hour tourist police whose number is 06-1-438-8080 and the 24-hour pharmacy which has the number 06-1-311-4439. So depending on the emergency you’re in, there’s always someone to call.
Budapest emergency dentist
If you find yourself with a dental emergency in Budapest, you’re probably in the best place in Europe to have one. As you can read about in an article we wrote, the dental industry in Hungary, and in Budapest especially, has been booming of late. This means that there are tons of clinics as well as private practitioners who can help you with a dental emergency. If you need to reach someone 24/7, then FirstMed might be your best bet. Their clinic number is +36-1-224-9090 and their staff is proficient in the English language. If your emergency is less pressing, you might want to check out WhatClinic where you can pick your own dentist based on whether they speak English and their location.
Budapest emergency vet
Emergency vet services might be a bit tricky to find in Budapest, but we have found a couple which differ in availability, language barrier, and animals they treat. A solid place to start is the veterinary department of the University of Veterinary Medicine. They admit emergencies from 8:00 to 20:00 on a workday, and at any hour during Weekends and Holidays. Another vet, Animal Hospital of Budapest, offers a 24/7 emergency service but only for dogs and cats whilst Állatmento can be contacted night and day, but they are not fluent in English. In short, you need not worry that your furry companion would be in any danger when staying in Budapest.
