Best Things to Do in Funchal in April 2022

Funchal may not be the largest city you will ever visit, but that does not mean it's not packed to the brim with fun events and exciting places to see. And though April on the "Isle of Eternal Spring" won't feel that much different from other parts of the year, its venues will for sure. So here are the top four events in Funchal in April 2022.

Madeira Film Festival

The film festival, taking place from 21st and 27th April, features 12 short films and 18 feature films, all focused on the natural beauty of Madeira as well as on challenging the audience. There will be four film screenings every day in the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias and a small animation block on April 23rd at 16:00. The third edition of the festival is not all about film viewing as there will also be talks, workshops, educational panels, and concerts. If you're in Funchal or anywhere in Madeira around that time, make sure not to miss out on this unique Madeira event.

Madeira Island Ultra Trail

Held on April 23rd, this mountain marathon attracted over 1500 participants from over 45 countries worldwide last year. This highly demanding but advantageous run takes place along the entire island's length and on the hilly and rough terrain of its mountain range. The best runners still took more than a dozen hours to finish this endurance test with the three-stage run. However, the natural beauties of the island, as well as the admiration of many people who spectate parts of this marathon, will be yours to enjoy, and the sense of accomplishment, regardless of the time, will be one you'll remember for years to come.

EXPOTROPICAL

This festival is all about food. Specifically, it seeks to celebrate the unique exotic fruits of Madeira Island between 21st and 25th April. You won't only get to taste the island in ways that would otherwise be difficult to do all in one place, but also, you will get the chance to enjoy the traditional music and dance of the region. With tons of other entertainment, the whole festival is one to mark in your calendar. And the last great thing about it is that most of the earnings from the festival go straight to the minor fortunate families of the Praça do Povo parish.

Street art of Rua da Santa Maria

While Funchal has tons of interesting historical sights like the Old Town, the Sé Cathedral, or the Monte Palace and its tropical gardens, if you want to enjoy a truly contemporary and unique folk art project, you must visit the Rua da Santa Maria. With over 200 works of art painted on the doors of this otherwise shabby part of town, the street has been livened up and created a one-of-a-kind cultural space. If you want to see something genuinely authentic yet artistic, this is a must.
