Best Things to Do in Barcelona in May 2022

Barcelona is one of the most gorgeous places in Spain. And May, with temperatures around 23°C, is one of the best times to visit. There’s a lot to recommend so let’s get right to it and look at the best things to do in Barcelona in May 2022.

May events in Barcelona

The first event is for lovers of racing and fast cars. The annual Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on May 22nd is popular both with drivers and fans alike which always makes this tradition fun and exciting. Practice will take place on May 20th and the qualifying race will happen on May 21st so if you fly down to Barcelona for an extended weekend, you won’t miss out on anything.

Another great event is the DocsBarcelona International Documentary Film Festival. As the name suggests, this festival celebrates everything connected to documentary films and filmmaking with competitions, master classes, and talks. From the 18th to the 29th of May you can enjoy some of the best documentaries about daily life and extraordinary issues of the world.

If you love traditional music and dance then you simply have to go and attend the Festival Cuitat Flamenco. With a packed program stretching over 9 days from the 20th to the 29th of May, you can expect well-established stars of the dance as well as up and coming dancers that will simply dazzle you.

There’s also the International Day of Museums on the 18th of May which is celebrated by many museums and galleries in Barcelona. This usually means a free admission as well as some special program, depending on the institution. Lastly, the second fortnight in May sees the Nou Barris neighbourhood light up with traditional festivities. Admission is free and there are tons of things to see and enjoy, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Places to go in Barcelona in May

Places like Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, or Casa Vicens are well-known sights of Barcelona and architectonic marvels. But the city is more than just Gaudi and architecture. Try taking the Montjuic Cable Car which, thanks to the clear May weather, gives a stunning view of the city. And once you’re up on the hill, check out Barcelona’s castle, the Joan Miro Foundation, and the Magic Fountain.

Alternatively, if you just want to have a good time, why not try a trip on a party boat. And evening costs around €50, but you will have access to a true party boat experience together with BBQ, a pool, drinks, and great music. And if this sounds like a bit too much, just head on down to the Barceloneta beach where you can enjoy the sun and some cool drinks. And if even this beach is too crowded for you, try Nova Icaria, Bogatell, and Marbella which tend to be a bit calmer. There’s something for everyone.
