Best Digital Nomad Groups to Join in Budapest

Traveling to Budapest is one of the most gorgeous experiences you’ll ever have. However, even such a great experience can be spoiled a little bit by loneliness and feeling lost. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Join an online group of expats and digital nomads in Budapest and meet people in pubs or at events. You might be a remote worker eager to travel far from friends and family, but there are new friends waiting for you at your destination.

Meeting other digital nomads can be a huge help when it comes to living abroad. Hungary is not an especially difficult place to live, but that doesn’t mean that all the red tape and untranslated communication doesn’t confuse people all the time. Being able to ask questions, find apartments for rent in Budapest and talk to people about their experiences is crucial for figuring out what to do.

The first group to recommend is the Budapest Digital Nomads Facebook group. It’s well moderated with very little self-promotion and provides relevant information as well as a good (if small) community of digital nomads.

Another fun (though English language only) group is the Budapest Entrepreneurs Facebook group. They welcome anyone who is interested in starting or running a business or freelances and they have tons of helpful posts, share events, and meetups.

There are also some forums on sites like expat.com or ExpatExchange but some of them are only archived (meaning you can’t post). Regardless, they are still good places to look for some general information about Budapest and Hungary in general.

Online interactions are fun and informative but nothing beats meeting people in real life. But this can be hard, especially when you’re new to a town and don’t have a social circle yet. Luckily, there are tons of events and groups that meet up in real life which you should check out.

Firstly, there is Creative Writing Budapest, an English-speaking group of authors and readers all meeting up in person, reading short prompts from one another, providing feedback as well as support. They also do bi-weekly creative writing workshops so if you ever wanted to finally finish that novel or begin your memoirs, this place is perfect.

There’s also Budapest Personal Development Meetup which takes place outdoors and can be an interesting place for anyone who wants to have space to be a bit more introspective. Then there’s Budapest Toastmasters for when you want to brush up on your public speaking.

And when you want to blow off some steam, why not join the Bar Crawl with the Locals? This event takes expats on a great and lively night out. Visit all kinds of interesting bars and pubs, both well-known and obscure, meet digital nomads from all over the world as well as locals and have a good time. Whatever you choose to do in the end, there is a lot more to do in Budapest than we managed to write about here, so go out and explore. After all, 80% of life is showing up.
