Wintertime has come, and many of us are itching to go out and enjoy this magical season. But where should you go? Europe has many countries that change beyond recognition by winter and are fun and exciting to explore. So here are some of the best ones.
Czech Republic
Winter turns the Czech Republic into a truly picturesque sight. Whether you’re staying in the countryside or Prague, the thick layer of snow will pepper all of the scenery with lovely lace. Go for walks in the country or stroll around the capital and enjoy the festive feeling.
But that’s not all, most of the large and small towns have their traditions during wintertime. Whether it’s markets, unique Christmas decorations, or events, you will indeed find something fun for everyone. And if you are more into sports, you can try out the top-rated cross-country skiing or ice skating on lakes that have frozen over.
Hungary
Hungary is truly magical during winter. Budapest is especially fun because you can enjoy all kinds of festivities. Cafés and restaurants start selling local Christmas foods and drinks, there are markets where you can see traditional crafts and delicacies and the city is dotted with musicians playing carols – new and old. And you can always stay in, huddle in a blanket, and watch the snowfall with some lovely tea. However, be mindful of the fact that Hungary can get rather cold and dark. Some people even recommend taking vitamin D supplements since there isn’t much sun in Hungary during winter. Also, make sure you pack your warmest clothing. Hungary sees its average temperature around the freezing point during the day and a couple of degrees below the freezing point at night.
Portugal
Portugal’s winter is very different from the previous two countries, making it an excellent destination for visitors during winter. Not only is the temperature mild, between 15° and 20°C on a sunny day, but there are also great waves for surfing. Don’t expect any snow, though.
Wintertime Portugal has a lot to offer its visitors. There are winter markets and events throughout the country, seasonal food like feijoada (bean stew) and Caldo Verde (shredded kale) is rolled out, and the towns are full of the smell of roasted chestnuts. Many people also recommend visiting the countryside during winter as it has a unique charm that is not present in the summer months.
Austria
The last country we went to recommend for winter visits is Austria. Austria is in many ways like the Czech Republic or Hungary but for one crucial feature – the Alps. The Alps are a mountain range in the southern region of Austria, and it gives ski enthusiasts one of the best places in the world for skiing. Every year, towns like Innsbruck, Vorarlberg, or Kitzbühel fill up with lovers of the sport, and you should join them. See the magical rolling hills in the distance as you go down kilometres of pristine slopes and enjoy a truly merry Christmas.
